Description meta-tag
The description meta-tag allows you to describe in human-readable
text what your page is about. It is intended for use by search engines
and directories as a description of your page, so that their visitors
can accurately identify what the page is about.

The description meta-tag, like the title and keywords meta-tags, has
been abused in the past, so many search engines pay less attention to
it. Smaller, regional, search engines still use the description tag to
describe the page, but the larger search engines, like Google and Yahoo,
sometimes use extracts from the content of the page rather than the
description.
It is becoming clear, though, that the larger search engines will
display your description if it contains the search terms that are being
used by their users. This gives you a wonderful opportunity to sell your
page to the prospective visitor, as long as your description accurately
describes the content of the page, using the most important keywords
prominently.
If your content is well written, the first few lines should introduce
the rest of the article. This will make it extremely easy to create
descriptions for your pages simply copy the first few lines. You can
use the same technique when creating descriptions for RSS news feeds, if
you want to syndicate the content of your site to others.
